Citroen to launch its first electric car in the Indian market by 2022

French carmaker Groupe PSA will commence its operation in India through its Citroen brand. The company will first launch Citroen C5 Aircross followed by a flexi-fuel subcompact SUV Citroen C21. Furthermore, the brand is also planning to enter the electric car segment. There has been speculation that Citroen might launch an electric mini SUV codenamed eCC21 by the year 2022. It will likely be priced around Rs 8 lakhs (ex-showroom). Also, the mini-electric SUV  will compete against the likes of the upcoming Mahindra eKUV100 and Tata Hornbill in its segment.

In 2017, the PSA Groupe and CK Birla Group entered into a partnership. Thus the vehicle will be produced at CK Birla Group’s Thuruvallur manufacturing facility based in Tamil Nadu. Both the ICE Citroen CC21 and electric eCC21 mini SUV will be based on Groupe PSA’s CMP (Common Modular Platform) and eCMP platforms respectively.

In the global market, the e-CMP platform cars come with a 30 kWh battery pack and a 100 kW electric motor that offers a WLTP range between 310  kms - 340 kms. The carmaker might introduce the eCC21 with a small battery in the Indian market. According to media reports, the Citroen electric mini SUV is likely to feature a 30 kWh battery pack. Furthermore, it will be based on Citroen’s design language. The spy images of the ICE Citroen CC21 mini SUV have already been released earlier. Talking about its electric iteration, it will be the first model to be produced under the brand’s C-Cube low-cost car project. This project majorly focuses on emerging markets. The French carmaker aims to manufacture 3000 units of electric cars annually and plans to retail around 1 lakh units by 2025.
