Ford has issued a huge recall for 9,53,000 vehicles equipped with defective Takata airbag inflators. This recall includes 7,82,384 vehicles in the United States and other territories, and 1,49,652 in Canada.
The models that are affected include Ford Edge and Lincoln MKZ built at Oakville between Nov 28, 2008 and Jul 12, 2010. Ford Ranger assembled at Twin Cities from Aug 14, 2008, to Jun 21, 2014. Ford Fusion, MKZ and Mercury Milan assembled at Hermosillo from Jul 3, 2008, to Jul 29, 2012 and the previous-gen Mustang as well made at Flat Rock between Jun 8, 2009 and Dec 16, 2011.
The American automaker has started contacting the owners and they will replace the airbag inflators or the module of the cars free of cost. Takata airbag recall is the biggest recall in the automotive industry. The defected units of airbag inflators contain a chemical that can detiorate when exposed to humidity and high temperature. This can spread shrapnel into the cabin when the airbag deploys.
