The new Bajaj Chetak is one of the most awaited launches of 2020. The Chetak is projected to be priced at around Rs 1-1.5 lakh (ex-showroom) as the first all-electric scooter of the Indian company. The price will be enticing, but not aggressive as Bajaj MD Rajiv Bajaj said.
Bookings will commence in the coming days and shortly afterwards, the first e-scooter units will be launched in Pune and Bengaluru – at least initially, before they are made available in major metro stations such as Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai.
What we know about the Chetak so far makes it seem like a compelling proposal, if slightly expensive. A 4kW electric motor that sends power via a unique automated transmission to the rear wheel derives power from a lithium-ion battery pack that claims to deliver a real-world range of 95 km in Eco Mode and 85 km in Sport Mode.
Bajaj will equip the Chetak e-scooter with features such as feather touch switchgear, full-LED lighting and digital display to further justify the marginally higher price point. On the mirror stalks, side stands and pillion foot pegs, the company has also used high-quality materials, further underlining its premium positioning.
Ather's 450 and 450X will be the closest rivals to the Bajaj Chetak – as the former is currently priced at Rs 1.14 lakh the latter will be a more direct rival to the Chetak.
