2020 Mercedes Benz GLS has been presented in two variants: 400d diesel and 450 petrol.
Mercedes Benz India has launched the all-new GLS SUV at Rs 99.90 Lakhs (Ex. Showroom, India) in the country. The third-gen Mercedes-Benz GLS originated from the GL Class while the local production started in 2013 at the company's Chakan facility in Pune. It has been presented in two variants: 400d diesel and 450 petrol. Having made its world premiere in April 2019, the 2020 Mercedes Benz GLS will directly rival the BMW X7, Volvo XC90, Audi Q7 and Range Rover Sport in the Indian market. The company, on the sidelines of GLS launch, also said that it will launch the EQC in India next within the upcoming two weeks.
The 2020 Mercedes Benz GLS has grown in size as compared to its predecessor. The GLS SUV is longer by 77mm and wider by 22mm while the wheelbase has also been increased by 60mm. Being based on the German luxury automaker's Modular High Architecture (MHA) architecture, it has been presented in a new Hyacinth Red paint scheme. The SUV rides on 21-inch alloy wheels and with the two rear seats down, the boot capacity gets as high as 2400 litres. One of the premium highlights includes the automatic suspension which allows the height adjustment of upto 50mm with just a touch of a button. The safety features on the GLS SUV include Active Park Assist with 360 degree surround view camera, Blind Spot-Assist, Active Brake Assist, 9 Airbags, Downhill Speed Regulation (DSR) and Off-road ABS.
The GLS has been packed with premium bells and whistles as standard in the form of pillow headrests, 11 USB ports, 2 wireless chargers, 13 speaker Burmester sound system, Five-zone automatic climate control, 64-colour ambient lighting, charcoal air filters, MBUX touchscreen infotainment system, dual 11.6-inch screens for the second-row seats, and panoramic sunroof. The SUV also gets the latest #MercedesMe app with a lot of new features which include Over the Air Updates, Geo fencing, Vehicle Finder, Remote operation of windows and sunroof etc. to name a few. Though, most functions can be performed by using a tablet mounted in the rear centre armrest. The company has sold nearly 6700+ units of the GLS in the Indian market.
Being the largest SUV in the Mercedes Benz portfolio globally, the GLS is powered by the BS6 compliant twin 3.0L in-line 6-cylinder engines. The petrol engine delivers a top power of 367bhp and peak torque of 500Nm while it also gets an additional 22bhp and 250Nm from the 48V mild-hybrid EQ system. The diesel motor, on the other hand, generates maximum power output of 330bhp and highest torque performance of 700Nm. Both the engines are linked to a 9-speed torque converter automatic transmission as standard with power being transmitted to all the four wheels via the 4Matic four-wheel-drive system. Martin Schwenk, Managing Director and CEO, Mercedes-Benz India digitally launched the GLS at the company’s Centre of Excellence in Chakan, Pune.
