Mercedes has revealed the final edition of the S65 AMG as the car is getting discontinued soon

Mercedes-Benz will discontinue the iconic 6.0-litre twin-turbo V12 engine that powers the S-Class sedan. The brand will present the S65 Final Edition at the Geneva Motor Show to mark the departure of this engine. The S65 Final Edition represents a somber moment in the history of Mercedes-Benz. The V12 engine has been a legend in itself but the brand has to pull its plug now due to tightening fuel economy regulations around the world.

Mercedes haven’t revealed official images of the Mercedes-AMG S65 Final Edition but it is likely that the sedan will be quite similar to the regular S65 AMG barring some special badges to denote its significance. When production of the S65 Final Edition has run its course, the S-Class sedan will join the G65 and SL65 on the course of discontinuation with AMG’s V12 engine. Future AMG models will instead feature a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 engine.

Fortunately, the Mercedes-AMG 6.5-litre V12 engine can still be had with the Coupe and Convertible variants of the S-Class. However, these cars are also slated to be discontinued once the next-generation S-Class launches.

Tobias Moers, the chief in command at AMG stated that manufacturing of the engine will continue but it will be restricted to vehicles from the Maybach brand. This is good news for customers who still want their hands on the 18-year-old M279 engine with 621 HP of peak power and 1000 Nm of torque, given that they shell out the Maybach money for the privilege
