Toyota Yaris was first showcased at 2018 Auto Expo before making its debut in the Indian market in the same year. Toyota Yaris has just sold a shade above 15,000 units since its launch, attributed to the lack of a diesel engine. With the phasing out of Corolla Altis and Etios, Toyota has put all it focus on the Yaris and put its entire weight behind its only sedan currently being sold in the Indian market. To boost sales, Toyota plans to launch a new fleet variant equipped with a speed-limiter. India is one of the largest markets for taxi-hailing cab operators and Toyota sees this as an opportunity.
In a discussion with the leading auto publisher, Naveen Soni, Senior Vice President, Sales and Customer Service, Toyota Kirloskar Motor, said, “There are different segments that open up as the market opens up. So, from that point of view, how do we get more segment-associated features added or deleted? Maybe make it more attractive for the taxi customer; because while the Etios is not there, we have the Yaris to offer for that customer. Very soon, we should be looking at the possibility of a specced-down Yaris.”
The Japanese automaker recently removed Etios from its offerings in the Indian market leaving Yaris as its only sedan currently on sale. Toyota Yaris competes with the likes of Maruti Ciaz and Honda city in this highly competitive segment. Toyota Yaris is currently powered by a BS6 compliant Double VVT-i, 1496 cc petrol engine. The powertrain is capable of generating 106 bhp of maximum power output with 140 Nm of peak torque. It comes equipped with tons of features like projector headlamps, remote locking, power windows and electrically adjustable OVRM.
With the taxi variant, we can expect trimming of features to keep the price low for the commercial sedan. Currently, the base variant of Toyota Yaris is available for Rs 8.76 lakh (ex-showroom) Delhi.
