4th-Gen Toyota Yaris hatchback rated 5-star under new Euro NCAP testing rules

Euro NCAP revealed the first results under its new 2020 protocols. European spec Toyota Yaris hatchback was tested against the revamped protocols and it came out with flying colours. The 4th generation family car became the first model to be tested against all-new frontal offset tests. Toyota Yaris achieved a 5 Star Rating under the new safety test that now takes into account counter-measure for injuries in far-side collisions. The mobile progressive deformable barrier (MPDB) test is about two things - protection for the occupants as well as the damage it can cause to the colliding vehicle. Toyota Yaris did exceptionally well due to its small size and benign front end. Its dual front airbags inflate in the event of a side impact to minimize risk to the occupants.

The New-Gen Yaris hatchback comes equipped with Toyota Safety Sense for stopping the vehicle while turning to avoid collision with the incoming traffic.  Yaris has been a stand-out performer with the first-generation winning the 'European Car of the Year' title. The second-generation model was the first B-segment vehicle to get a 5 Star Rating in Euro NCAP safety testing protocols.

However with reference to the Indian market, the Yaris is sold as a sedan and not a hatchback. It is powered by a BS6-compliant Dual VVT-i 1.5-litre petrol engine. The powertrain delivers a maximum power output of 105 bhp with 140 Nm of peak torque. Talking about the transmissions, it caters to a 7-speed automatic CVT found across all variants while the option of a 6-speed manual gearbox is also available with the sedan. As far as safety features are concerned it provides 7 airbags, ABS (Anti-Lock Braking Systems) with EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution), impact sensing door unlock, high-speed alerts, parking sensors among others. Toyota Yaris is currently priced at Rs 8.86 lakhs (ex-showroom, India).
