Honda unveils New-Gen Civic prototype with India launch expected in early 2022

Honda has just revealed the 2021 New-Generation Civic in the form of a prototype. This will be the 11th Generation which will be replacing its predecessor given that the earlier model had passed 5 years since its last unveiling. Honda Civic has been a tremendous success for Honda across the international markets as well as in India. As mentioned above, it is just a prototype but we expect the production model to be on the similar lines which would go into production by next year. Its sales for the global market will begin in the first quarter of 2021 with the line-up consisting of the hatchback, performance-oriented Type R and Si variants with the coupe trim discontinued. The Civic has been part of Honda’s offering since 1973 with the current model being the most successful till date. It rivals the likes of Toyota Corolla Altis, Hyundai Elantra and Skoda Octavia in the domestic market.

Talking in detail about the prototype, the manufacturer has revealed that 2021 Honda Civic is based on a new modified version of the current model’s platform. Dimension wise, the new-gen model looks longer and wider in comparison to the current version with the wheelbase being an inch longer. The  New Civic's design reminds us of a mini Honda Accord with shorter overhangs, sedan appearance and a pushed back A-pillar. The design is simple and clean with no creases and no circular fenders. Further, one can spot a single horizontal line running from the headlights to the taillamps with a second smaller line rising beneath the wheels. Up front, its grille is thinner and sleek LED lights mark a complete departure from the older model. Also, the designers at Honda have swapped the fake vents in the bumper with new fang-shaped intakes. The rear profile is redone with a new tailgate, integrated lip spoiler and larger taillights. The chrome influence is found only on the Honda and the Civic badges on the trunk.

Honda has also released a sketch of the interior which marks the first-time appearance of the configurable digital gauge cluster in the sedan. Further, the cabin will boast of a larger 9.0-inch touchscreen infotaintment system that would offer Wireless Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, two cup holders, climate control among many others. Plus there will be multiple airbags, revamped Honda Sensing safety and driver-assist technologies in the upcoming Civic.

No details have been revealed yet about the powertrain options, however we expect the current model of engines to power the latest Civic. In India, the Honda Civic is offered with both petrol and diesel engines. The BS6 Honda Civic petrol price starts from Rs 17.93 lakhs (ex-showroom, India) while the diesel model sells for  Rs 19.44 lakhs. We can expect the New-Gen Honda Civic to arrive in India by early 2022.
