After much wait, Maruti plans to launch 3-door Jimny SUV next year in India

Maruti Suzuki continues to keep Jimny launch still under the wraps. First showcased at the Delhi Auto Expo 2020 earlier this year in February, its anticipated introduction has been quite debatable. With an outright denial by the company representatives, its presence in the country could become a reality. Now, an image has surfaced on the internet of the SUV being assembled at Maruti’s Gurugram manufacturing facility. According to rumours, 50 units of the three-door Jimny have been assembled at the facility as it arrived through the CKD route (Completely Knocked Down) from Japan. The brand plans to display 3-door version at various Nexa outlets throughout the country. We can expect the launch to take place in the first quarter of 2021. Maruti Jimny will rival the likes of New-Gen Mahindra Thar in the Indian market.

Earlier, expectations were of the 5-door SUV coming to the country but the success of 2021 Mahindra Thar might have forced India’s largest automaker to rethink its strategy. With the 3-door Jimny being available at dealerships from January 2021, it would help Maruti get an idea of the demand for it. In the event of a good response from the Indian customers, the manufacturer could look at the idea of producing the 5-door Jimny. It would help Maruti saving money, effort and resources in re-engineering the SUV as a 5-door.

Talking more about the Jimny, it comes with similar body-on-frame structure as the Gypsy and New-Gen Mahindra Thar. It would be vastly different from Maruti Vitara Brezza currently selling in the domestic market. Expect three-door Jimny to be powered by a longitudinally mounted K15B engine sourced from Suzuki. The transmission could include manual as well as automatic units considering internationally, it comes equipped with a 5-speed manual and 5-speed automatic torque converter. Plus, there will be all-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive options. The same engine powers the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Ciaz, XL6, Ertiga but mounted in a transverse position.
