Porsche’s 911 GT2 RS has just broken the lap record at the Nürburgring with a lap time of 6:47.30.

The record the GT2 RS broke was for the fastest road legal, rear-wheel-drive car. Porsche’s latest managed this by setting a lap time of 6:47.30. Not only did the car break the RWD record, the GT2 RS also managed to become the second fastest road car around the track ever, just 1.4 sec behind the Nio EP9.

What really shows this car’s prowess is that it is the fastest Porsche around the Green Hell, beating the 918 Spyder hybrid hypercar’s time by more than 10 seconds. To achieve this time, Porsche used two 911 GT2 RS cars, driven by Lars Kern and Nick Tandy. Lars Kern was the test driver who set the record.

Talking about this achievement, Andreas Preuninger, the GT model line director, said “We’re particularly proud of the fact that this was achieved with two different vehicles and two different drivers, as this underlines the GT2 RS’s ability to reproduce this record result over and over again.” Porsche’s motorsport vice president said, “The credit for beating our target goes to our development engineers, mechanics and drivers, who demonstrated an exceptionally strong team performance.”

The cars used road legal Michelin Pilot Cup 2 tyres for the record run and the weather was on Porsche’s side.
