The SUV will be powered by V12 and V8 engines and will take on the Bentley Bentayga and Lamborghini Urus.

The production version of the DBX, which will be called the Varkai, is due on roads in 2019. The production model is currently in the development stage and its design was signed off late, last summer. The Varekai sticks to the the brand's naming convention of names starting with a V – like the Vantage, Vanquish and Valkyrie.

The production car will take on the Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini Urus, Maserati Levante and top-end Range Rovers and Porsche Cayennes. CEO Andy Palmer though said that the DBX will stand apart from them “because it has not sacrificed any beauty to achieve its practicality or performance”.

The car will use Aston’s 5.2-litre V12, which will be modified to make 600bhp in this car. There will also be an AMG-sourced 4.0-litre, twin-turbo V8 that makes 503bhp under the hood. Palmer said that there won’t be diesel versions of the DBX but a hybrid is quite likely. “This is not an Aston Martin that is exclusive to any one type of buyer,” said Palmer

Preparation for production of the Varekai has commenced at the company’s plant in St Athan in Wales.
