The carmaker will showcase its next-gen infotainment system with Android fully integrated.

Google’s I/O developer conference (May 17-19) will see the world premiere of Audi’s concept of a next-generation infotainment system that’s fully integrated with the Android operating platform.

One of the exhibits at Google’s conference features Android as a seamlessly integrated solution for in-car infotainment applications. The tech is being developed by the Android Open Source Community and its millions of members.

The Audi Q8 sport concept technology platform, which Audi is presenting at Google I/O, already has Android on board. New functions, including the streaming service Spotify, Google Play Music and Google Assistant, all run on the MMI touch display that sits on the dash. The info is also visible in Audi’s virtual cockpit directly in the driver’s field of vision.

Even though the navigation map continues to use the carmaker’s HERE database, you also have the option to navigate with Google Maps. A message centre for incoming messages and calls will also be on display.

The Android platform is the world's most popular mobile platform and new apps can quickly find their way into the cars as additional connected services. Thanks to this there are shorter update cycles and a much more customisable experience.
