BMW plans to enter the Indian EV space next year. The German automaker will be launching two new cars - iX SUV and i4 Gran Coupe in the domestic market in 2022. Besides this, the brand has further formulated plans to introduce 25 electrified products globally by 2023.
Talking about BMW iX, it is an all-electric SUV and is based on an all-new aluminium space frame. Performance-wise, the vehicle gets BMW’s fifth-generation all-electric platform that further comprises two electric motors with a combined power output of 503 bhp. The 100 kW battery offers a maximum range of 600 km on a single charge. The electric SUV can accelerate from 0-100 kmph in just 5 seconds. It can further be recharged from 0-80 percent in a mere 40 minutes with a 200 kW fast charger.
“We'll bring it (EV) in, no doubt about it, but the time and volume will depend on the infrastructure and the policies. If the tariffs continue like this, we will fall behind. Until and unless we create a demand for the latest technology we cannot invest in it. The tariffs need to be reduced to create that demand and market. And I think that's a great opportunity for India right now,” as commented by Vikram Pawah, President, BMW Group India.
BMW i4, on the other hand, is a fully electric version of the 4 Series Gran Coupe. The car is powered by an electric motor that generates 523 bhp power. It can further cover 590 km on a single charge.
Besides this, BMW has successfully registered 6027 units sales in the first nine months of this calendar year. Currently, Mercedes Benz and Audi offer a range of electric cars in the country. Talking about it in detail, Audi’s lineup includes e-Tron, e-Tron GT, and e-Tron Sportback. Mercedes Benz, on the other hand, has an EQC electric SUV on sale.
