BMW could take on the Mercedes Project One with its own hypercar.

BMW says that the company’s M division could take on Mercedes-AMG Project One with its own hypercar. BMW has also said that, at present there are no concrete plans to do so. Mercedes-AMG recently unveiled the Project One at Frankfurt with a petrol-hybrid powertrain borrowed from the company’s current Formula 1 race car. This 1.6-litre engine makes 1,000hp with the help of electric motors.

BMW has been considering a return to the Le Mans endurance racing series. The German manufacturer has asked many motorsport companies to evaluate this. BMW has decided to focus most of their racing budget on the all-electric Formula E championship.

While talking about this, BMW vice-president Dirk Hacker was quoted saying, “Formula E could be interesting for us. M cars have roots in racing. It will be an interesting challenge as more OEMs get involved and there could certainly be the opportunity for some input from our engineering department in the series.”

A further indication to the halo car from BMW is its plan to introduce 12 all-electric models in its international line-up by 2025.
