CEO Wolfgang Dürheimer announced that the next hypercar from Bugatti will be battery powered.

Bugatti CEO Wolfgang Dürheimer has said that electrification is the only means to improve performance in the Chiron. He revealed that the next-gen Chiron will use electricity, in some form, to enhance performance. However, he also went on to say that this new car is expected to arrive sometime around 2032.

He also mentioned that they had been considering using battery power as a way of producing more power from the W16 engine for the current Chiron, but they stuck to the traditional method to get more power. Dürheimer was quoted saying, “Electrification will happen. The next car is a long way from being developed, but the way battery and electric motor technology is moving on – as well as regulations – it seems certain that the next car will be electrified in some way. It will still be too soon for a full electric car…”

The current Chiron uses an 8.0-litre, quad-turbocharged W16 petrol engine, capable of producing upto 1,500hp of power. The hypercar can hit a top speed of 420kph and can accelerate 0-100kph in less than 2.5sec. It currently weighs 1,995kg and we imagine adding heavy battery packs will only end up making it heavier. However, that should not be a problem because of the massive power figures it will produce.

Interestingly, Bugatti said that the firm is considering introducing a completely different model first, around 2024. It will likely be a high-performance vehicle that offers a little bit more practicality than what Bugatti owners are used to.
