An upcoming BYD vehicle model has been observed undergoing testing in international locations, and there are indications that it might be named the Sea Lion. Nevertheless, it remains uncertain whether this model will be introduced in the Indian market or if BYD will choose to rename an existing global model to suit the Indian market.
The test prototype seen overseas is predicted to belong to the midsize SUV category, with estimated dimensions of approximately 4,770mm in length, 1,910mm in width, and 1,620mm in height. Its wheelbase is projected to measure around 2,900mm. Preliminary images of the Sea Lion SUV reveal a design featuring a sloping roofline reminiscent of a coupe. This vehicle is anticipated to be constructed on BYD's e-platform 3.0. In contrast to the Atto 3, the Sea Lion is projected to be larger by approximately 315mm in length, 35mm in width, and 5 mm in height. Additionally, it will feature a 180mm extended wheelbase.
Internally, similar to other BYD models, the Sea Lion is expected to incorporate a 15.6-inch touchscreen that can rotate and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. Spy photographs of the Sea Lion SUV also show elements like a flat-bottom steering wheel and a compact drive selector, resembling the upcoming BYD Seal sedan.
Regarding its powertrain, the Sea Lion is anticipated to offer both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive variants. The former is expected to be equipped with an electric motor generating approximately 204hp and 310 Nm of torque, akin to the Atto 3. The all-wheel drive variant is likely to employ a dual-motor setup, delivering a combined output of 530hp (217hp from the front motor, 313hp from the rear motor). It is projected to be equipped with an 82.5kWh battery, offering a potential range of up to 700 km. This positioning is intended to position it as a competitor to the Tesla Model Y.
In terms of pricing and competition, the Sea Lion is expected to be positioned at a tier above the Atto 3 SUV, which currently holds a price tag of Rs 33.99 lakh (ex-showroom, India). In comparison to its American rival, the dual-motor Sea Lion model boasts a power output 45hp higher than the top-tier Model Y, whereas the entry-level Model Y surpasses the single-motor Sea Lion by 60hp.
Tesla is currently engaged in discussions with the Indian government to establish a manufacturing facility in the country. Although the factory's location has yet to be determined, Tesla's plans for India involve introducing the Model Y and a new affordable model manufactured within the forthcoming Indian factory.
