Citroen to launch sub-4 meter compact SUV in 2021.

PSA Group’s Citroen is all set to make an entry in the Indian market soon and their first car in the country will be the C5 Aircross. The French company had also showcased the SUV a few weeks ago and already present in European markets, the C5 Aircross looked very promising. The upcoming C5 Aircross will challenge the mid-size SUV like the Tata Harrier in the Indian market. However, apart from the mid-size SUV, the brand also stated that it plans on launching a new car in the Indian market each year for the next three years. Among these models will be an all-new car that will be first launched in the Indian market.

There are reports on the internet suggesting that this new car could be a sub compact SUV from the brand that will take on the likes of Maruti Brezza and Tata Nexon in the highly competitive sub-4 meter compact SUV segment. With the new model the brand will try to achieve large volume sales in the country so as to sustain itself in the market for the longer run. The upcoming model from the brand will be based on the C3 Aircross SUV.

Although based on the C3 Aircross SUV, the upcoming vehicle from the French maker will be based on a platform especially developed for India. With this SUV the brand will also aim to achieve a near complete localization so that the prices of the car can be decided competitively. One can expect the upcoming SUV to be launched with a price tag starting around Rs. 7 lakhs. This is the entry level price for the segment and if the French company launches the car around this price mark, it is sure to resonate with the Indian customers. On the design front, one can expect the upcoming SUV to be a smaller version of the C3 Aircross with a crossover inspired design that incorporates all the curves of the elder sibling.

This will be launched in the Indian market right after the launch of the C5 Aircross SUV and there are hopes that we will see the sub compact SUV in the market by 2021. As already mentioned, the upcoming Citroen car will take on the likes of Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon, Ford EcoSport, Mahindra XUV300, and Hyundai Venue in the Indian market.

As far as the mechanical aspect of the SUV is concerned, the French automaker is likely to bring out 3 engine options on the upcoming sub-4 meter compact SUV. The petrol engine options could be a 1.2L unit with a normal and a turbo variant rated to deliver around 83 Bhp and 110 Bhp respectively. The diesel engine could be 1.5L unit. The transmission will be handled by a 6 speed manual with an automatic likely to be launched at a later stage.
