If you don’t have FASTag on your vehicle, be prepared to pay double the charges at the toll plazas on the National Highways

The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has released a notification on FASTag yesterday, February 14, 2021. As per the official notification, all lanes at the toll plazas on National Highways shall be declared as “FASTag lane of the fee plaza” w.e.f midnight of 15th/16th February 2021. As per NH Fee Rules 2008, any vehicle not fitted with FASTag or vehicle without valid and functional FASTag entering into the FASTag lane of the toll plaza shall pay a fee equivalent to two times the fee applicable to that category.

What does the new announcement mean for the vehicle owners?

If you don’t have FASTag on your vehicle, be prepared to pay double the applicable fee at the toll plazas on the National Highways. For example, if the application fee is Rs 100 on the toll plaza, you will have to shell out Rs 200 in case FASTag is missing in your vehicle. There is no cash lane anymore so you have to pay double the toll charges.

If the vehicle has a FASTag but it is not valid or working?

In the event your vehicle’s FASTag isn’t working, you would have to pay twice the applicable fees at the toll plazas. In case, the balance is low and you are not able to pay the toll fees, you would have to still pay double the applicable fees at the toll.

How Does FASTag work?

It is a reloadable tag that allows the automatic deduction of toll fees by the Toll authorities. The tag is fixed on the vehicle’s windscreen and uses the RFID (radio frequency identification) technology. It helps in making the digital payment at the toll collection. If your vehicle comes with a FASTag, there is no need to stop at the toll booth for making cash payments. The money is automatically deducted from the account linked to the FASTag. It works just like the metro card.

Who needs FASTag?

The Ministry had mandated fitment of FASTag in M&N categories of motor vehicles with effect from 1st January 2021. Category ‘M’ stands for a motor vehicle with at least four wheels used for carrying passengers. Category ‘N’ stands for a motor vehicle with at least four wheels used for carrying goods, which may also carry persons in addition to goods.
