Google to retire Firefly autonomous driving prototype

The Firefly will be replaced by the more advanced Chrysler Pacifica minivans.

Google looks all set to retire its Firefly autonomous Car and use Chrysler Pacifica minivans instead. Waymo lead systems engineer Jaime Waydo and lead industrial designer YooJung Ahn have confirmed the news already. Waymo has stated that this move will increase access to the autonomous driving technology for more people in lesser time.

A statement by Waymo said, "By focusing on mass-produced vehicles like the Pacifica minivan, we'll be able to bring fully self-driving technology to more people, more quickly."

Each Chrysler Pacifica minivans are fitted with newer sensors and technology enabling greater distance with increased clarity. Apart from offering more comfort, the minivans can move faster than 40kph unlike the Firefly. They will be developed in such a way that they can be commercially mass-produced very soon by major carmakers.

Google hadn't intended to mass produce its Firefly model. The Car was developed primarily as a research vehicle.
