The Union Minister, Nitin Gadkari, has stated that the ministry is trying to reduce the number of accidents in India by half by 2024.

The government is planning to make Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) safety functions like blind spot monitoring mandatory for all new automobiles to minimize road accidents. Several automakers are focusing on adding ADAS to their new premium vehicles to make them more appealing to customers. However, there are only a few commercial vehicles or mass-market models that come equipped with ADAS. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is planning to make functions like blind spot monitoring a mandatory feature across various segments of commercial vehicles and four-wheelers.

The ministry has suggested the automakers install collision warning systems in all new cars. MoRTH has specified the installation of an integrated "Moving Off Information System," or MOIS, in the identified vehicle types. To avoid any possible collision, the system will alert the driver when a child, pedestrian, or cyclist is in proximity. The Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) blind spot detection systems perform the same duties in vehicles, and in more serious situations, advanced systems can also autonomously apply the brakes. If such a system is installed in all passenger vehicles, then India’s road accident statistics will come down by a big margin.

Road accidents in the country increased by 12% last year to 4.6 lakh. In India, on average, every hour, 19 people die due to road accidents. Blind spot or ‘Hit from Back'-related accidents accounted for the biggest share of 19.5 percent. Apart from MoRTH, the Union Minister, Nitin Gadkari, has also shared that the ministry is trying to reduce the number of accidents in India by half by 2024.
