South Korean maker Hyundai is gearing up to shake up yet another segment in the car market of the country. After having caused the topple of Maruti Vitara Brezza sub-4 metre compact SUV with thelp of their Venue SUV, the maker is now looking at repeating the same feat in the mid-size hatchback segment with their upcoming launch of Grand i10 NIOS. This will be the next generation model of the Hyundai Grand i10 and it is scheduled to be launched on 20 August, 2019. The production of the hatch has started at the company's Sriperumbudur factory near Chennai. Soon the dispatches for the hatch will start taking place. However, the maker has no plans to immediately discontinue the current Grand i10 in the market and the two hatches will be sold alongside in the Indian market. This will mean that the Grand i10 will become a budget offering in the segment and will give an even tough time to the Maruti Suzuki Swift and Ford Figo. The bookings for the latest gen Grand i10 NIOS have started and the launch date will likely see the delivery of the cars being made.
Speaking of the occasion of the start of production of the Grand i10 NIOS, the managing director and CEO of Hyundai India, SS Kim stated,
“This is a proud moment for us at Hyundai, with over 2.7 Mn Happy Customers the i10 brand (i10 and GRAND i10) has been one of the most loved hatchback in India. And today we are set to create history again with the Global First – roll out of 3rd Generation GRAND i10 NIOS, which will set new benchmarks in the hatchback segment while creating Brilliant Ownership experience for our customers.”
Upon launch, the Grand i10 NIOS will lock horns with Maruti Suzuki Swift and Ford Figo among others in the segment. The upcoming hatch from the brand is based on the platform used in the newer version of Santro and it has been extended the form the underpinnings of the new larger hatch. The new platform will not only make the upcoming i10 NIOS bigger, it will also help the hatch shed a lot of weight.
The Grand i10 NIOS will come with a 1.2L petrol engine rated to deliver 81 Bhp and 114 Nm and this engine will be BS-VI at the time of the launch in Indian market. On the other hand, the diesel engine will be a 1.2L unit rated to deliver 74 Bhp and 190 Nm. Both the engine options will come with the choice of either a 5 speed manual or a 5 speed AMT unit. Moreover, the diesel engine will be BS-VI compliant ready at the time of launch. Talking about mileage, the figures of NIOS Grand i10 is greater than that of the current Grand i10.
