Hyundai has announced that its best-selling midsize SUV, the Creta, has crossed the 10 lakh sales milestone in the Indian market. The automaker first launched the midsize SUV in July 2015, and in eight years and five months it has achieved this massive milestone, with total sales of the car crossing 12.7 lakh units incorporating exports. By July 2023, the Creta had surpassed the 900,000 sales number in the domestic market.
The automaker has sold 100,000 units of the SUV in just eight months, which showcases the increasing demand for the Creta model. The SUV alone accounts for 41.54 percent of the company’s SUV sales in India, retailing 131,039 units in the initial 10 months of fiscal year 2024. As of now, Hyundai holds the third position in India’s sports utility vehicle (SUV) segment, while the first position has been maintained by Maruti Suzuki and second position by Mahindra. In CY2023, the SUV maintained its status as the country’s top-selling midsize SUV by contributing 44 percent to the company’s SUV sales of 360,823 units. Hyundai's dedication to diesel has paid off, as diesel models, particularly those with automatic transmissions, now account for 45 percent of Creta sales in India.

Hyundai offers the Creta SUV with three powertrain options: a 1.5-liter diesel engine, a 1.5-liter petrol engine, and a 1.4-liter turbocharged petrol engine. The company’s strategy has allowed it to maintain its position as the country's third-ranked sports utility vehicle manufacturer and the country's second-largest OEM for passenger cars. As of December 2023, the manufacturer has exported 282,542 units of made-in-India Creta. Notably, in the initial months of FY2024, exports have dipped by 98 percent year-over-year, mainly because of prioritizing demand in the Indian market.
Hyundai Motor India is also gearing up to unveil the all-electric Creta. The new EV is scheduled to debut at Auto Expo 2025, and it is likely to hit production in the latter half of 2024. The upcoming electric Creta will give tough competition to the likes of the Mahindra XUV400 and Tata Nexon EV.
