Hyundai's arch rival Maruti Suzuki will commence production at the Manesar facility from May 12.
Hyundai India had restarted production at its facility in Sriperumbudur, Chennai from May 8, 2020. The company rolled out 200 cars on the first day of production resumption after a break of nearly 45 days due to COVID-19 pandemic. The South-Korean automaker has commenced the production again only after following the safety guidelines from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India and Tamil Nadu state government. Hyundai had also started sales operations across the country with 250 showrooms and service centres initially from May 5, 2020.
The company will ramp up the production in a phased manner while more dealerships will open in coming weeks but only after complying with the government's safety guidelines. Hyundai's arch rival and the country's biggest automaker, Maruti Suzuki, will commence production at the Manesar facility from May 12. In a letter issued by the company to the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), Maruti said, "All activities would be carried out strictly in accordance with the government regulations and guidelines, and observing the company's own concern for the highest standards of safety." The production at Manesar and Gurgaon manufacturing units was suspended on March 22, 2020.
Hyundai Motors is following the practice of 360-degree safety – ‘Care at workplace & Care at all times’ within the factory premises which includes 100 percent physical distancing compliance in accordance with standard operating procedure (SoP). “In line with the Government’s objectives of reviving the economy and Hyundai’s Global Vision of Progress for Humanity, the commencement of manufacturing operations is aimed at boosting economic activities and striving to bring back normalcy,” the company said. Hyundai has two plants in Sriperumbudur, Chennai and the combined annual production capacity of these facilities is 7.50 Lakh units. One new car is rolled out every 33 seconds from each of the two plants when fully functional.
