The electric SUV could be launched in India by end of 2018.

With hybrid cars falling under a lofty 43 percent cess under the GST regime, carmakers are re-evaliating their hybrid-car plans in India. In a similar move, Hyundai recently decided against bringing its Ioniq and hybrid variants of the New Verna and Creta to India. However, the carmaker is contemplating on introducing a small e-SUV in the Kona EV.

The recently unveiled SUV will be sold internationally with both petrol and diesel engines, but only the electric variant will be brought to India. The Kona will be Hyundai’s second EV globally.

While hybrid cars attract a 43 percent cess, electric cars have been taxed at a lower 12 percent under GST. The classification is the government’s bid to switch to full-electrics by 2030.
