Hyundai i20 Elite, Verna likely to get turbo petrol engines.

Hyundai recently launched their first sub-4 meter compact SUV in India – the Venue. This new feature loaded offering in the segment also comes with the latest 1L turbo petrol engine from the company. The 1L turbo petrol engine on the Venue is rated to deliver 118 Bhp and 172 Nm and is available with the higher trims of the SUV. However, now there are reports that the South Korean car maker is preparing to offer this engine on the Veran and i20 Elite as well.

If this turns out to be true then we can see a significant bump in the outputs of the Verna as well as i20 Elite as the new engine is potentially more powerful than the engine offered on either of the two cars by the company. The 1.6L petrol engine on Verna is rated to deliver 121 Bhp and 153 Nm while the i20 Elite comes with a petrol engine rated to deliver 82 Bhp and 114 Nm. As far as the petrol engine on the two cars are concerned, the offering of the turbo engine on the two cars will see the company being prepared to take on the future emission regulations.

There are chances that the South Korean maker will ditch the diesel engine for lower displacement cars altogether when the stricter emission norms come into force, but the Verna could still continue to come with a diesel engine. The new turbo petrol engine on the i20 Elite and the Verna will keep the company unfazed about the emission norms at least till 2022. Another interesting fact is that the maker already offers the turbo petrol engine on the global variants of the i20 Elite, and hence bringing it into the Indian model should not any problem for the company. However, the turbo petrol engine will surely be offered in a lower state of tune in the i20 Elite.

Several other makers like the industry leader Maruti Suzuki have already announced their plans regarding diesel cars come April 1, 2020 when the stricter BS-VI emission norms will be enforced and Hyundai has also made its strategy clear regarding the same. The new emission norms will see the diesel cars going expensive as the development of diesel engines that comply will involve a huge investment which would in turn push up the costs of the diesel models in the market. Therefore, it is only right that the South Korean brand is preparing to offer a turbo petrol engine on the high volume vehicles of the model line-up such as the i20 Elite and the Verna.
