The company’s small and rugged SUV is coming to India next year.

1. It’s relatively compact:
The car sold abroad is 4.2m in length, 1.7m in height and 1.9m in width, while Hyundai’s Creta is 4.2m in length, 1.6m in height and 1.8m in width, and Renault’s Duster is 4.3m in length, 1.69m in height and 1.8m in width. The Renegade, when introduced here, will be the tallest and widest car in this segment.

2. It may use the Compass’ engines:
The same engines that do duty on the Compass may power the Renegade as well, though they’ll be tuned to make less power. What you can expect is the new, locally assembled, 2.0-litre Multijet diesel engine that makes 140hp, and a 1.4-litre MultiAir petrol motor that makes as much power.

A 1.6-litre MultiJet diesel engine, making around 120hp in the Renegade, is also being considered.

3. Four-wheel drive may be optional:
Only select variants may offer four-wheel drive - the Jeep name is of course synonymous to off-roading prowess.

4. Expected market launch in late 2018:
The car is expected to be launched in 2018, or sometime early in 2019. Like the Compass, this car will be assembled at the Ranjangaon plant.

5. It will be Jeep’s most affordable SUV in India:
Priced below the Compass, the Renegade will take on the Creta and the Duster. Expect it to be priced a slight premium within its segment – it could be priced at ₹1 lakh more than the Creta.
