Kia plans to launch a new premium hatchback in India to challenge Volkswagen Golf and Hyundai i30.

Hyundai’s sibling Kia has been aggressively advertising in the country ahead of its entry in the Indian market. The company revealed at the 2018 edition of Indian Auto Expo that their first car to hit Indian market would be the Kia SP concept. Apart from putting up and impressive show at the Auto Expo, the company also presented a lot of models for the general public. Now there are reports coming in that say that the Korean brand is planning to launch a lot many models in the subsequent years. Next in line is a compact SUV made specifically for India and in the country and later the Hyundai sibling could also launch their Ceed premium hatchback in India. The reports were later confirmed by the senior GM for marketing and PR of Kia Motors India, Sun Wook Hwang.

Delving deeper on the subject of Kia’s upcoming premium hatchback for Indian market, the Kia Ceed is likely to be placed above Hyundai i20 and Maruti Suzuki Baleno in the market. This may just be new segment in rising as the upcoming Ceed is more premium than the Baleno or even i20. Therefore, the car will face no direct rivalry upon its launch in India. The global model of Kia Ceed is 4.3 meters long, if the same model is brought to India, the upcoming premium hatchback will no longer be eligible for the tax subsidy reserved cars smaller than 4 meters in length. This will place the upcoming Kia around the price segment of Honda City. The Kia Ceed is already sold in the global market and it locks horns with bigger and more premium hatchbacks such as the Volkswagen Golf and Hyundai i30 there.

The Indian market has no such category as of now but just like the EcoSport, the Kia Ceed could carve its own niche when it arrives here as the taste of urban public in cars is rapidly evolving in India.  The growing congestion in the cities could just open up a market for a car as comfortable as an executive sedan but without the dimensions of the same. Kia will bring the GT Line version of the Ceed to India. This version of the premium hatchback comes with sporty bumpers, red and black exterior detailing, and large 17-inch alloy wheels.

Talking about the mechanicals of the upcoming Kia Ceed, the upcoming hatchback is equipped with a 1.4-litre direct-injection turbocharged petrol engine rated to deliver 140 Bhp. The diesel option is a 1.6L unit rated for 136 Bhp. The engines come with a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
