Local assembly of the Mini Countryman starts

The cars will be built at BMW's plant in Chennai.

The all-new Countryman costs Rs 34.90 lakh, and the company is locally assembling the car at the BMW Group plant in Chennai. According to Vikram Pawah, president, BMW Group India, the car uses over 50 percent local content, similar to other locally assembled BMW models.

The Countryman is available in three variants – the Cooper S (Rs 34.90 lakh), Cooper SD (Rs 37.40 lakh) and the sporty Cooper S JCW Inspired (Rs 41.40 lakh) (all prices, ex-showroom). The petrol under the hood of the Cooper S and Cooper S JCW Inspired is a 2.0-litre, turbocharged engine that makes 192hp and 280Nm. The Cooper SD gets a 2.0-litre diesel producing 190hp and 400Nm of torque. Power goes to the front wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox and while the four-wheel-drive or ALL4 versions are only on sale internationally.

The car is fitted with the latest iDrive infotainment system with a touchscreen, 18-inch alloys (non-JCW trims get 17-inch wheels), a rear spoiler, a rear view camera, a sporty steering wheel, a Harman Kardon system, a head-up display, wireless charging and stainless-steel pedal covers.
