Technology never ceases to amaze us as it continues to make our lives easier and Apple is a perfect illustration of the same. Since it launched its first smartphone on June 29, 2007, the American tech giant continues to raise the bar for technology excellence. The Apple Smartphone isn’t just about clicking stunning pictures, it’s also about connecting humans with technology. At the recently concluded Apple Worldwide Developers Conference, the company unveiled a stunning tech feature called CarKey for iPhone users. A kind of invisible car key which will help the iPhone users in opening their cars effortlessly. The new Apple operating system iOS 14 will come with the CarKey. The feature will be coming in iOS 13 too. The first vehicle to support this amazing technology from Apple will be the 2021 BMW 5 Series.
CarKey pairs the vehicle to Apple Watch or iPhone which helps the buyers to share their key digitally with close friends and family members. The whole feature operates through Apple Wallet. The upcoming 2021 BMW 5 series buyers can use the BMW Digital Key for the iPhone to unlock their car with just a tap. You just need to tap your iPhone against the door handle or the outside NFC reader and the car is unlocked. Just place your iPhone on the Qi wireless charger, press the ignition switch and you are set to drive your car.
It’s not a new tech as some might say considering various other automakers also offer digital car keys with the same functionalities. The problem is that if you have multiple cars, you would need separate apps to unlock different cars in your garage. With the iOS operating system, you can store all the digital keys for the different cars at one place.
CarKey launch rumour started when a CarKey API came in the iOS 13.4 beta version. As of now, the CarKey will be available in 45 countries and a range of BMW models like 1 series, 2 series, 3 series among others which are manufactured after July 1, 2020. Apple isn’t stopping at this only, they also released information about the future developments of CarKey. The users wouldn’t be required to physically touch the iPhone to open their locked vehicles. Simply, users can use the Ultra-Wideband system for opening the car. This feature is expected to go live in 2021.
