Mahindra Thar had first arrived in the Indian market way back in October 2010. A compact, mid-sized, four-wheel drive, SUV modelled on the off-road Jeep CJ, it became a raging hit among the Indian automobile enthusiasts. Mahindra & Mahindra unveiled a new Thar variant named Roxor for the American market but positioned it as an off-road vehicle. The Thar in itself is a very capable vehicle but it’s rare to spot one without modifications. Jeep Wrangler often serves as an inspiration for customized Mahindra Thar mules. Recently, we came across a classy modified Mahindra Thar by Azar 4X4.
Design-wise, the modified Thar is different from the original and looks similar to Jeep Wrangler SUV. At the front, the grille is redesigned and comes with inserts surrounding the vertical slats. Chrome garnish is a pleasant inclusion in the headlight and the turn indicators. Automotive designers placed a Jeep badging just above the front grille. Bonnet is reworked plus the inclusion of a hood lock gives the Thar a complete Jeep Wrangler look. A stock car bumper is swapped with an aftermarket unit with integrated fog lamps. If you observe carefully, one can spot a skid plate under the bumper.
Taking a look at the side profile, the Thar gets black fender flares with side indicators like the Jeep Wrangler. The modified Thar comes in a red and black colour scheme, this is quite the same as the Jeep Wrangler SUV. The Soft top Thar makes way for a hardtop in a black shade with aftermarket all-black alloy wheels. A window for rear passengers is there but it can’t be opened.
At the rear, the designers haven’t tweaked much with the tail-mounted spare wheel, LED tail lights, off-road bumper and a glass door retained. Interior wise, the side-facing rear seats are swapped with a front-facing and get a moon roof as well. The designer’s efforts are clearly visible as the customization is done wonderfully.
There is no modification done to the engine with the customized Mahindra Thar delivering the same power as the stock one. The new-generation Mahindra Thar is expected to arrive later this year with updates in design as well as BS6 compliant engine. As per the reports streaming in, 2020 Mahindra Thar is expected to come with both diesel and petrol engine options. The 2.0-litre turbo-diesel unit will belt 140bhp of power and the new 2.0-litre ‘TGDi mStallion' turbo-petrol engine producing 180bhp of power.
