Maruti Suzuki Eritga has always been one of the highest-selling MPVs in the Indian market. With the advent of BS6 Emission Norms, a number of diesel vehicles were discontinued. Maruti Suzuki Ertiga diesel was one of them. However, it seems that the brand is planning to launch Maruti Suzuki Ertiga BS6 diesel model in the country sometime soon.
The MPV was recently spotted doing test runs somewhere near Delhi NCR. Spy shots of the same have been leaked online. From these spied images, we can clearly see the model bearing a Tour M badge at the rear. This further indicates that the model is a Tour M commercial variant of the Ertiga MPV. The variant is exclusively meant for taxi/fleet operators. Furthermore, the test mule looks similar to the model currently on sale. However, the DDiS badge on the front fenders was missing or should we say rather deliberately removed. This further confirms that the model had a BS6 diesel engine under the hood.
Earlier Maruti Ertiga was offered with a 1.5-litre diesel engine. This engine generated a maximum power output of 94 bhp and a peak torque of 225 Nm while being mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. Currently, the MPV is powered by a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine. This petrol unit churns out 103 bhp power @ 6,000 rpm and 138 Nm torque @ 4,400 rpm. It is linked to a 5-speed manual gearbox.
The demand for diesel-powered vehicles is growing strong day by day in the country. Also, Maruti Suzuki had earlier stated that they will reintroduce the 1.5-litre diesel unit in the BS6 format if they witness a growing demand for the same after the introduction of new stringent emission norms. Thus, with an aim to boost sales especially in the commercial segment, Maruti might work on resurrecting its 1.5-litre diesel engine and make it BS6 compliant.
