The automakers were unable to sell even a single unit due to the nationwide lockdown in India.
India has been under a Coronavirus lockdown since March 25 and the Union Government yesterday announced an extension of two more weeks till May 17, 2020. So, all the two-wheeler and four-wheeler dealerships were closed for the whole month of April. Hence, for the first time in history, several autogiants such as Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Mahindra etc. among others have reported zero domestic sales. Though, the companies exported a few units to global markets but they could not sell even one unit in the country due to the lockdown imposed by the Ministry of Home Affairs, India.
Talking about Maruti Suzuki, it exported 632 units from Mundra port while the domestic sales was zero. Hyundai India, which is the country's second largest automaker, exported a total of 1341 vehicles to the international markets from the port in Chennai. Mahindra was also able to export 733 vehicles to overseas markets. As it was practically impossible for these automakers to sell even a single unit in the domestic market, they somehow managed to export a limited number of vehicles to other markets. Though, MG Motor had to be content with total cumulative sales of zero units, including both export and domestic sales, as the company has not yet begun the export from Indian shores.
The month of May is also not going to bring relief to the automakers as the lockdown has been extended for further two weeks till May 17. Even though the government has provided some relaxations in cities where there are no active cases of COVID-19 but the road to recovery for automakers seems very far away. Though, several automakers including Honda, Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes Benz have also started taking bookings through dedicated digital platforms in order to sell vehicles in the domestic market. However, it is yet to be seen if they get any success in it or not. On the other hand, in what seemed to be a bizarre move, Tata Motors announced to not release monthly sales figures at least for the next six months. Indeed a very tough time for carmakers in India.
