Maruti Suzuki Jimny likely to go on sale in the Indian market in early 2022

Maruti Suzuki India is planning to expand its SUV product portfolio with the launch of the much-anticipated Jimny SUV in the country. The homegrown automaker has been working on the SUV’s market plan for quite some time now. Earlier this year, Maruti started the manufacturing of the 3-door Jimny in India for the export markets.

As per a media report, the automaker is now planning to introduce the 5-door version of the Jimny in India. It is being speculated that the 5-door Jimny will debut alongside the updated 3-door Jimny in early 2022. Talking about the price, the 5-door version of the Jimny is likely to fall in the range of Rs 10 lakh - Rs 12 lakh (ex-showroom). Once launched, it will rival the likes of Mahindra Thar and the new Force Gurkha. Also, Maruti has been collecting feedback from prospective customers. It aims to give the off-road SUV some India-specific feature upgrades and cosmetic changes based on the feedback.

"We started manufacturing the Jimny in India for export markets 2-3 months ago. The export numbers for the made-in-India Jimny are quite good. We showcased the Jimny in India at the Auto Expo 2020 for our Indian customers, and we have collected a lot of feedback. We are still doing research on Jimny's pricing in India, or whether there should be India-specific changes in the car, etc. We haven't decided on the launch timeline for it yet.  Once we have that finalized, we shall let you know," as commented by Shashank Srivastava, executive director, sales and marketing, Maruti Suzuki India.

Performance-wise, the ‘Made-in-India’ Jimny will be powered by a 1.5-litre K15B petrol engine that will generate a maximum power of around 102 bhp. Transmission options will include a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic gearbox. There are speculations that the manufacturer might also offer a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine that does duty on Vitara Brezza, Ciaz, Ertiga, and S-Cross.
