Seeing EV as the futuristic approach to surge sales of automobiles, Maruti Suzuki has taken the initiative to launch their first pure EV by 2025. Maruti Suzuki is even aiming to broaden their EV [portfolio and launch the next 6 EVs by 2030. Furthermore, even that being said, the automaker would only turn 20% of its sales by pure electric vehicles by 2030, as suggested by Chairman of Maruti Suzuki, RC Bhargava.
PTI suggested that Bhargava said that Maruti Suzuki was trying to convert their most common flagship hatchback WagonR to an electric variant. He even confirmed the success of getting a fully-functioning EV version of WagonR EV but overall manufacturing cost experienced a surge. This increased cost is then becoming the hurdle and is making the EV version less viable. Therefore, the automaker started developing a bigger electric car, the chairman reportedly suggested.
To pique the interest of prospective buyers, the automaker showcased the Maruti eVX EV at the Auto Expo 2023, which was previewed as a compact SUV model. The automaker is claiming that with the launch of this EV model, the electric SUV is promising to provide a range of around 550 km on single charge.
When showcased in February 2023, the specs of the Maruti eVX EV came out as 4300 mm in length, 1600 mm in height, and 1800 mm in width. You can expect the debut of this EV to come out as a full launched product by 2025.
Bhargava commented about their EV strategy that their lower car segment is not such as to be converted into an EV segment. Bhargava also commented, “ Now let’s look at developing a bigger model because the car segment is not such that it could be converted to electric operations and still remain within the affordability region for customers of that car.” Additionally he said that there will already be a lot of EVs running on the Indian roads by the time Maruti enters the EV segment later by 2030.
The chairman of Maruti Suzuki after speaking about the Indian car market at large suggested that it is a booming marketplace. He additionally confirmed that it is turning into a highly competitive market. Furthermore, if the automobile companies have to compete and stay put in the market, they have to bring the best of products, best of models, best of technology, highest reliability of products, and best of customer service, Bhargava reportedly added. “That’s what Maruti has been trying to do all these 40 years. That is what we will continue to achieve. And we will continue to see that we make our efforts to keep a huge segment of the market under our control,” he reportedly confirmed.
