Amid growing demand, Maruti launches CNG variant of new WagonR

After launching the all-new WagonR in January, Maruti Suzuki has now brought out the tall-boy hatchback’s CNG version. Prices for base WagonR CNG start at Rs. 4.84 lakh and the other variant is priced at Rs. 4.89 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi. The CNG models will be available in two variants only. The company has decided to call the CNG variants as S-CNG, where the S denotes ‘Smart’.

Based on the lightweight HEARTECT platform, the new version of WagonR is not only larger than before but also more spacious. Talking of the petrol variant, Maruti decided to offer the hatchback with 2 engine options this time around. The petrol WagonR is comes with the choice of a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder engine and a 1.2-litre 4-cylinder engine, but the latter is available only with top variants.

Back in January at the launch of the new model, Maruti had said that the CNG version would soon be made available. Talking of the same, the CNG version is not offer with the 4-cylinder option, rather WagonR CNG only comes with a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder engine. So far the maker has not revealed the power stats of the CNG model, but it should remain the same as the petrol version.

As far as the 3-cylinder model of WagonR is concerned, the 1.0-liter engine in the model is rated at 67 Bhp-90 Nm. Whereas, the 4-cylinder model generates 82 Bhp and 113 Nm with its 1.2-litre engine. Maruti offers both manual and automatic transmission options with its petrol engine but the CNG model will be sold only with the manual transmission.

While launching the WagonR CNG, MSIL’s senior executive director of marketing and sales Mr. R.S. Kalsi said that the brand is constantly trying to offer technologically superior and eco-friendly products for India. The WagonR S-CNG offers 26% better mileage than the previous model and is more reliable, eco-friendly, and safe as well.

The CNG variant of WagonR has a dual ECU paired with intelligent Gas Port Injection System (GPIS) that improves the acceleration and driving experience, something that the customers often complain about. The stock CNG system of the car is built with anti-corrosive and stainless steel parts that in turn offer better safety levels for the end user. Apart from separate fuel level indicators for petrol and CNG, WagonR CNG also provides a lag free switch from one fuel to the other.

Not just all that, the new WagonR CNG also addresses the perennial mileage concern of customers in India. The new model offers an improved mileage as compared to the outgoing version. While the older model offered a mileage of 26.6 km/kg of gas, new WagonR S-CNG offers a mileage of 33.54 km/kg, bettering the older model by nearly 26%. The new WagonR S-CNG competes with Hyundai Santro’s CNG model in India.
