Maruti updated their WagonR early this year and the car has been a big hit among the customers in the market. The new update brought an entirely fresh design for the WagonR and also the option of larger engine. Amid the slowdown that the company is facing currently, the WagonR has been the harbinger of good news for India's largest carmaker. The sales for Maruti WagonR have been so good that the tall-boy hatch from the Indian maker has been selling more units than the total units of Hyundai Santro, Renault Kwid and Tata Tiago combined. Talking numbers, one finds that the updated version of Maruti WagonR sold 14,561 units in May 2019 whereas the rivals like Hyundai Santro could manage 4,902 units, Renault Kwid 5,152 units, and Tata Tiago 3,535 units only.
Hyundai Santro was brought back to life by the South Korean brand at the end of 2018 and was supposed to give a tough fight to the Maruti WagonR. However, the new update to WagonR made the tall-boy hatchback much larger than before, the improved styling and the option of a more powerful engine were only an icing on the cake. The new Maruti WagonR is also based on the lighter and stronger HEARTECT platform that not only brings down the weight of the car but also boosts mileage, safety, and performance of the car. In fact, almost all new small Maruti cars like the Swift, Dzire, Ignis, and Baleno are based on the new HEARTECT platform.
The new Maruti Suzuki WagonR comes with the option of a 1L, 3-cylinder petrol engine rated to produce 68 PS and 90 Nm, which is the same engine offered on the previous generation of the car. However, the major update was the introduction of the option of larger 1.2L, 4-cylinder petrol engine option on the new WagonR, this new engine is rated to deliver 82 Bhp and 113 Nm. While the more powerful engine comes with the option of a 5-speed manual or a 5 speed AMT, the older engine comes only with a 5-speed manual as standard.
Maruti also recently launched the CNG-petrol model of the new WagonR, the CNG kit on the car is a dealer level upgrade. However, the CNG fitting in only available with the smaller 1L engine. Talking of the updates on the newer model of Maruti WagonR, the safety features are in tune with the BNVSAP norms and come with a driver side airbag, ABS, reverse parking sensors, seat belt reminder for driver and front passenger, and speed alert as standard. The launch of the updated model also saw the prices of the car going up slightly and the new WagonR’s prices now start at Rs. 4.29 lakhs, ex-showroom Delhi. However, the sales figures tell that customers feel the higher price tag is justified.
