The New E 220d costs ₹57.14 lakh (ex-showroom, Pune) and is closer in terms of price to the entry-level E 200 Petrol (₹56.14 lakh). The previous V6 powered E 350d cost ₹69.46 lakh leaving quite a large margin between the two.
The car features a new, modular 2.0-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine, which replaced the carmaker’s 2.1-litre diesel unit internationally last year. The motor makes 194hp and 400Nm of torque and is mated to a nine-speed automatic gearbox. The new engine was initially meant to be delayed until the new, stricter BS-VI emission norms came into effect in a few years in India. But the company has managed to re-engineer it to run on our BS-IV-grade diesel.
As far as appearance is concerned, other than the badging on the boot lid and different design alloy wheels, there are no changes. On the inside too, there are very minor changes that you may not notice - the wood grain is a different colour, the upholstery design is a bit different and you still get the spacious rear cabin with the reclining rear seats. Equipment you get includes LED headlamps, ambient lighting, a panoramic sunroof, three-zone auto climate control, a reversing camera, seven airbags, ABS and stability control. However, like the E 200 petrol, the E 220d doesn’t feature an air suspension, the Burmester hi-fi audio system, the memory function for the front seats and the 360-degree camera.
The advantage this car has is that this version brings a diesel engine option to a much more affordable level.
