Mercedes-Benz India has achieved its highest half-yearly sales in 2023, setting a remarkable milestone for the company. The period from January to June witnessed a significant year-on-year growth of 13 percent, with a total of 8,528 units sold. What makes this achievement even more impressive is that it was accomplished without the presence of one of Mercedes-Benz's most popular models in the core luxury segment, the GLC SUV. However, customers can look forward to the launch of the second generation of the GLC later in July.
The strong momentum from the first quarter continued into the second quarter of 2023, as the company's order book exceeded 3,500 units. This surge in demand prompted Mercedes-Benz India to ramp up production to meet customer expectations. The second quarter also marked the best-ever sales performance, with a total of 3,831 units sold, representing an 8 percent growth compared to the same period in the previous year.
Santosh Iyer, the Managing Director of Mercedes Benz India, attributes this record-breaking sales performance to multiple factors. Firstly, the high desirability of the brand has played a crucial role in attracting customers. Secondly, the company's attractive portfolio of vehicles has catered to diverse customer preferences. Thirdly, the improved availability of cars has ensured that customers have access to the models they desire. Lastly, the successful implementation of the 'Retail of the Future' business model has enhanced the overall customer experience. With a strong focus on customer satisfaction, Mercedes-Benz India aims to further elevate its offerings and continue the growth of its top-end vehicles, which have outpaced other segments. The company is excited about the upcoming quarters, as it has planned the launch of several highly anticipated luxury vehicles, beginning with the new-generation GLC.
In addition to the overall success, Mercedes-Benz India has witnessed a significant surge in electric vehicle (EV) sales. Despite starting from a relatively low base, EV sales grew tenfold, indicating a growing interest in sustainable mobility. The introduction of new EV models such as the EQB and EQS has contributed to this impressive growth. Furthermore, the top-end vehicle segment, consisting of vehicles priced above Rs 1.5 crore, experienced remarkable growth of over 50 percent in the first six months of the calendar year. This segment accounted for more than 2,000 units sold, reaffirming the strong demand for luxury vehicles in India.
During the first half of the year, Mercedes-Benz India observed a particularly high demand for several models. The GLS, S-Class, S-Class Maybach, GLS Maybach, and AMG G 63 stood out as the preferred choices among customers. The long-wheelbase (LWB) E-Class emerged as the best-selling model for the company, while the GLE secured its position as the top-selling SUV. Additionally, the new C-Class made a significant contribution to the overall performance of Mercedes-Benz India by driving demand and generating substantial sales volumes.
The outstanding half-yearly sales performance reflects the enduring appeal of the Mercedes-Benz brand, its robust product portfolio, and the company's commitment to delivering an exceptional customer experience. As the year progresses, Mercedes-Benz India is poised for continued success, with a lineup of highly anticipated luxury vehicles planned for the remaining quarters. With its strong market presence and a dedication to innovation, Mercedes-Benz India is set to maintain its position as a leader in the Indian automotive industry.
