MG Gearing Up To Launch eZS Electric SUV in India

Chinese-owned British brand MG Motors has been having an amazing time in the Indian market. The brand recently made its entry in the Indian market with their Hector SUV and the vehicle has already been completely booked for 2019. In the bid to take things further, the Chinese-owned British brand had recently presented their eZS electric SUV on a global level. As the brand had already made clear, the new electric SUV will be launched in India in Q1 2020 and will the second product from the company to hit India markets. The car will be manufactured at MG’s Halol plant in Gujarat making it the first made in India fully electric SUV and since the car will be produced locally, prices will be relatively lower.

The SUV is already on sale in international market but the global specs of the electric SUV may not be offered in Indian market and one can expect the company to make some tweaks for the Indian model of SUV. In the global market the MG eZS comes with an 110kW electric motor that is rated to produce 150 PS and 350 Nm. The naught to 50 kmph figure for the SUV stands at 3.1 seconds and the electric vehicle offers a range of 350 km. There are chances that the Indian version of the eZS may come with a 52.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that will give the SUV a range of nearly 400 kms. This ought to be a good range for the Indian market where the charging infrastructure is nearly non-existent. The eZS will come with a DC fast charge option too which would charge up to 80 per cent of the battery capacity under an hour. The global model of the SUV can be fully charged in 8 hours via the standard charger.

MG plans on pricing the upcoming electric SUV eZS very aggressively in India and one should not be surprised to see the car come with a shocking sticker price. MG had initially planned to import the eZS in the Indian market as a Completely Built Unit (CBU) and produce the SUV later in India. However, now that the brand is aiming at localising the SUV to an extent of 75%, one can be assured of a price tag as comparatively competitive on the levels of Hector SUV.

The upcoming car will be launched as a premium product. As of now there is only the lone Hyundai Kona which is a premium fully electric car, but the CBU import nature of the Kona pushes its price quite high. Whereas the eZS may come with a sub 20 lakh price tag. The other makers are still working on their electric products and we may get to see more cars in the electric segment in the future, but as of now the eZS will remain virtually unchallenged for a while.
