Mumbai Police Expands Segway Fleet to Secure Seaface

15 Segway electric scooters to man Marine Drive Promenade.

Mumbai, the financial capital of India is often called a city that never sleeps and is brimming with citizens at any time of the day. Marine Drive, one of the famous tourist attractions in the city will now be safeguarded with the addition of Segway fleet. A prominent promenade, Marine Drive came in the news when people descended there as soon as the lockdown was eased. With Coronavirus Pandemic not easing anytime soon, social distancing needs to be practised fervently. Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh inaugurated Segway electric scooters for the Mumbai Police at Marine Drive. The Segway Scooter fleet will help the policemen in maintaining law and order on Marine Drive and other tourist spots like Versova and Juhu beaches. 

15 Segway electric scooters

The first 15 scooters were flagged-off by the Home Minister, the self-balancing electric scooters are designed to carry one person only. A pretty effective mobile means of manning the Marine Drive without impacting the environment. Electric Segway is powered by a Samsung Lithium-ion battery enabling the rider to travel 20 kms distance on a full charge. The battery power capacity is 29 volts and within 60 minutes the charging goes up to 80 percent. In the case of low battery, the rider is alerted and if the battery percentage reaches 10 percent then the segway electric scooter will turn off gradually. 

Mr Deshmukh commented to the media outlets about the prospects of Segway electric scooter, “While the deployment will begin with 10 Segways at Worli, and five at Nariman Point, we eventually plan to deploy these latest self-balancing electric scooters at Bandra, Juhu and Versova too. The Home Ministry is keen on the modernisation of Maharashtra’s police force and wants them to be equipped with technology on a par with global policing standards.” 

The first 15 scooters were flagged-off

Segway electric scooter made its first appearance in 2017, in the starting, only two Segways were deployed. With Mumbai police getting comfortable with the idea of Segway, five more came into deployment at Marine Drive and four at Worli. Further, Segway riders will be provided face masks and public address systems in order to communicate with the crowd while maintaining social distancing.
