The car will be on show at the upcoming Detroit Motor show this month.

Images of the company’s next-gen G-Class have surfaced online ahead of the car’s official debut at the Detroit motor show later this month. Initially, the changes look minimal, but the revised headlight clusters and a new grille are what you instantly notice.

On the inside, there’s an extra-wide screen stretching from the instrument cluster to the middle of the car. This screen works as both a digital dashboard and an infotainment screen. The car will officially be unveiled on the first day of the Detroit motor show. The car will feature a substantially more luxurious interior and strong links to the S-Class - much of the electronic architecture will be shared with the luxury sedan.

The G-Class will also receive a new range of engines, including AMG’s turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 petrol unit and parent company Mercedes-Benz’s new 2.9-litre in-line six-cylinder diesel. The engines are mated to a new nine-speed automatic gearbox.

Thanks to its aluminium construction, Mercedes officials say, the car weighs 160kg less while providing a 30 percent increase in torsional rigidity. There will be lots of driver aids included as well - Safety tech includes Active Lane Keeping Assist, and the company’s Pre-Safe system. The SUV has been extensively tested at Mercedes’ punishing off-road course in Schöckl, Austria.

The new suspension setup promises greater comfort, and it receives adaptive damping control too. The new steering unit also offers a greater degree of precision. Expect Mercedes to bring the new G-Class to our shores later this year.
