Volkswagen is one of the largest car companies of the world but the brand has seen its sales dwindling in India lately, not that they were very great initially. Now with the merger of Skoda and Volkswagen being announced in India, the two brands are now pulling up their sleeves to launch new vehicles in the Indian market. The new strategy under which these cars will be launched has been termed as the India 2.0 strategy. These new launches will be aimed at reviving the sales of the German brand as well as the Volkswagen owned Czech brand Skoda in India. With Skoda taking charge of making and allied works in India, the two brands will launch 8 cars in India. Let us take a look as to what the two brands have in store for their Indian customers.
Skoda Kamiq
Brand to launch car by 2020
Highlights – New compact SUV from Skoda will challenge Hyundai Creta and Nissan Kicks in Indian market. The brand will place it as a more premium option in the compact SUV segment. Kamiq will be built on the modified MQB platform that has been altered for developing markets such as Brazil and India. Kamiq to be showcased in India at Auto Expo next year.
Skoda Rapid
Brand to launch car by 2021
Highlights -- Skoda Rapid to witness full model replacement in Indian market. New model of Rapid to make use of the MQB A0 IN developed especially for India. Rumors indicate the new model will come with a 1L turbo engine option.
Volkswagen Vento
Brand to launch car by 2023
Highlights -- Volkswagen Vento to get the same treatment as Skoda Rapid with full model replacement in India. Volkswagen to replace the ageing Vento with the Virtus in India. The same 1L turbo petrol engine to make appearance on Vento as well.
Skoda Karoq
Brand to launch car by 2020
Highlights -- Skoda to offer more premium option in the high-end compact SUV segment with the Karoq. The CKD route of Karoq to make the car very expensive in India. Karoq to lock horns with Jeep Compass and Hyundai Tucson in India. Engine options may include 1.5L turbo petrol and 2L diesel unit, rumors of a 1.6L engine with DSG gearbox also doing rounds on internet.
Skoda Octavia
Brand to launch car by 2020
Highlights – Octavia’s full model change to include hybrid variant of the car in India. New models of car to likely come with 1.5L TSI petrol engine and newly-developed 1.5L diesel engine.
Volkswagen T-Cross
Brand to launch car by 2021
Highlights – New compact SUV from Volkswagen to be based on the MQB A0 platform developed for the developing nations. Expect similar engine options as the Kamiq to make their way on T-Cross as well.
Volkswagen T-Roc
Brand to launch car by end of 2019
Highlights – Compact SUV from Volkswagen to be fully imported to India so expect a higher price tag on the vehicle. International version gets the option of 3 turbocharged petrol engines: 1L (113 Bhp-200 Nm), 1.5L (148 Bhp-250 Nm), and 2L (187 Bhp-320 Nm). VW to stuff SUV with features to justify price tag.
Skoda Superb Facelift
Brand to launch car by end of 2019
Highlights – Facelifted model of Superb to come with retouched interior and exteriors. Engine options also remain the same, although a mild-hybrid option may make its way to model line-up.
