Kia Motors has released the powertrain and platform details of the next-gen Sorento SUV which will have its world premiere on March 3 at the 2020 Geneva International Motor Show. It will be the first Kia product to be based on the all-new architecture while the production will commence at a later stage. The next-gen Kia Sorento will be offered with an array of engine options with several more powertrains including a plug-in-hybrid setup already in works.

It will also feature Kia's first Multi-collision Brake system which automatically applies vehicle brakes when the airbags have been deployed after an initial collision, further protecting occupants from secondary frontal or side impacts. The new SUV will feature 8-airbags including front seat center side airbags and knee airbags. Kia will also offer a remote smartphone Surround View Monitor to maximize parking convenience.

Kia has specified that for Korean, European and North American markets, the Sorento will be powered by the new ‘Smartstream’ turbo hybrid powertrain setup which will comprise of a 1.6L turbocharged T-GDi petrol engine, 44.2 kW electric motor and 1.49 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery pack. In fact, the European and Korean buyers can also avail the Sorento with the new 2.2L 4-cylinder ‘Smartstream’ diesel engine with top power of 199bhp and peak torque of 440Nm, while paired with a new 8-speed wet double-clutch transmission.

Kia is also offering a more powerful 2.5L turbocharged T-GDi 'Smartstream' petrol engine for the Korea and North Amercia spec model of Sorento. This engine will belt out 276bhp and 421Nm while linked to the new 8-speed wet double-clutch automatic transmission.
