New Maruti Suzuki Alto spotted under camouflage for the first time

Maruti Suzuki launched the Alto in the Indian market in September 2000. Since then the entry level hatchback has been growing strength to strength and has been one of the most successful models for the automaker. Now the company is planning to update it once again and this is evident from the recent spy shots that were leaked online.

According to the spied image, the test mule is completely covered in black camouflage. Thus it is hard to say whether or not there would be some exterior design changes. Though what we can confirm is that its silhouette will be the same as the current model. Moreover, the turn indicators are found mounted on the side fenders. The new model might also get updated headlamps. The revised tail-lamp cluster looked rectangular in shape while the bumper seemed a bit tweaked. Plus there is an addition of reflectors. Other design elements include door handles, ORVMs, and a roof-mounted spoiler. The test mule seen here offered steel wheels. The new Alto might get interior updates along with exterior.

Under the bonnet, New Maruti Alto might get an engine update for better fuel economy and improved safety quotient. Currently, the Alto is powered by a BS6 compliant 0.8-litre, 3-cylinder F8D petrol engine. This engine generates 47 bhp power @ 6000 rpm and 69 Nm torque @ 3500 rpm while being mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox along with a 5-speed AMT as an option.

Currently, Maruti Alto on sale is priced in the range of Rs 2.99 lakh - Rs 4.87 lakh (ex-showroom). We can expect the new model to get a similar starting price. But the mid-spec variant might get some premium features that would cause an increase in price. Also, the AMT version could be priced around Rs 4.5 lakh (ex-showroom). Once launched in the market, the new Alto will rival the likes of Renault Kwid and Datsun RediGo in its segment.
