Porsche’s junior sportscars will get a new 300hp, 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine.

Porsche’s latest ‘718’ Boxster and Cayman will be launched in India on February 15, 2017.

The new models are heavily updated versions of the carmaker’s junior sportscars, the biggest change in the models being their new turbo-petrol engines. Both the Boxster and Cayman ditch their naturally aspirated flat-six cylinder engines for more efficient, and even more powerful turbocharged flat-fours. While the model is internationally available with a 300hp 2.0-litre flat-four and also a 350hp 2.5-litre flat four, only the former, less powerful model will be available in India. A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic will be available as standard in India; India won’t get the option of an automatic gearbox. What’s nice is that despite the smaller engine, the sportscars aren’t down on power, and can accelerate from 0-100kph in a brisk 4.7sec.

Besides the downsized engines, the models also get a host of cosmetic updates, plus, there’s also a new touchscreen infotainment system on board.

Thanks to the smaller engines, the cars qualify for a lower tax bracket, and hence, are expected to be about 20% cheaper than the outgoing models. Prices are likely to start at around the Rs 80 lakh mark (ex-showroom). Also, starting with the 718 series, the Boxster will be the drop-top version of the Cayman. As a result, the Cayman will be more affordable than the Boxster.
