Owner of a Porsche 911 sports car, worth about Rs 2 crore, charged Rs 27.68 lakh to unpaid taxes, interest and penalties to get back his vehicle which had been impounded for lack of proper documentation and for running in the state without registration since 2017, police said Wednesday. Upon paying the money to the Ahmedabad Regional Transport Office (RTO), on Tuesday, the car owner-Ranjit Desai- took back his impounded car from the city traffic police upon displaying the receipt from the RTO, police sub-inspector M B Virja, who detained the silver-colored sports car last year in November.
Ahmedabad Traffic Police shared the RTO receipt photo on its Twitter handle and claimed the Rs 27.68 lakh fine was India's highest ever. "RTO slaps a fine of total Rs 27.68 Lakh on Porsche Car, which was detained during a routine check by Ahmedabad Traffic West Police for not having required documents." The car owner paid Rs 16 lakh on motor vehicle tax, Rs 7.68 lakh as interest on that unpaid tax and Rs 4 lakh as penalty, as per the receipt. On November 28, Virja stopped the car at the Helmet crossroad in Ahmedabad, because it had no number plates.
