Renault is making a big push in the Indian automobile market. Recently, the French automobile giant released a teaser video of a sub four-metre SUV on various social media channels. The upcoming Renault sub-compact SUV is expected to be retailed under the Kiger moniker. The rumours are swirling of Kiger's arrival in 2021 with unveiling expected tomorrow. Going by the teaser video, the upcoming SUV looks to be a pre-production concept unit. The Kiger will be based on the Renault-Nissan's CMF-A+ platform which underpins Triber and the upcoming Nissan Magnite. The automaker hopes Kiger will help it break into the much-coveted sub-4 metre compact SUV segment in the country. Considering the Magnite will be the cheapest sub-compact SUV in the domestic market, Renault is expected to competitively price the Kiger. So, buyers can expect the Renault Kiger price to start from Rs 5.30 Lakhs (ex-showroom, India).
The teaser video didn’t reveal much but the upcoming subcompact SUV is believed to come with a fresh and bold design. Other insights we could garner is the front profile flaunting stylish LED headlights while the rear end sports roof spoilers and square-shaped LED tail lights. The front profile design is completely different from other Renault cars in India. The body-coloured door handles add charm to the car. We do have to keep in mind that the teased model is a concept version with the production unit likely to differ in some aspects.
From the previous spy shots of the Kiger, we observed dual-tone rear bumpers, shark fin antenna, floating roof-line, grey-coloured roof rails and LED turn indicators. The SUV will ride on 5-spoke alloy wheels which could also see a change by the time the production unit arrives in the market. The Kiger design is more coupe-esqe if we compare it to Magnite’s taller appearance.
In the interior, the buyers can look forward to a new and bigger touchscreen infotainment system, digital instrument cluster, wireless charging, support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, automatic climate control, 360-degree camera and multi-function steering wheel. Expect the standard features like smartphone connectivity and Renault’s connected car technologies. The top-end trims will come with an electric sunroof.
The engine line-up will be the same as the Nissan Magnite which is launching on November 26, 2020, in India. Renault Kiger will come with two petrol engines- 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder naturally aspirated and turbocharged version of this very engine. The former delivers 71 bhp of maximum power output and 99 Nm of peak torque. The turbocharged version will belt out 100 bhp of power output and 160 Nm of peak torque. The transmission duties for both the petrol engines will be taken care of by manual and CVT units.
