Suzuki plans to make India the sole production hub for the Jimny

Suzuki Motor Corporation will be commencing the production of Jimny five-door soon. The company is planning to make India an exclusive production hub for the same. Furthermore, the Japanese carmaker is expected to import components and assemble the three-door version at its subsidiary Maruti Suzuki’s Gurgaon plant.

The company wants to make sure that the 3-door and the new 5-door versions of Jimny should be manufactured solely in India at Maruti’s Gurgaon facility by 2022-23. The components should also be locally sourced for the same. Suzuki has been in talks with a few Indian vendors for the past six months to source parts for the 5-door Jimny. The company is planning to produce around 1 lakh units in India. Out of these half of them are likely to be exported. Currently, around 50,000-55,000 units of Jimny 3-door are being produced in Japan. They are further being exported to markets around the world.

It is being estimated that once the production of both the 3-door and 5-door variants of Jimny begins in India, the total Maruti Suzuki Jimny production figures will be three times that of what Japan is being able to achieve currently. At present, Jimny is being manufactured at Suzuki’s plant located in Kosai, Japan. The annual production capacity of this plant is 4.9 lakhs units.
