Tata Motors has confirmed the launch of the much-anticipated Gravitas SUV in the first quarter of 2021 in the Indian market. It was originally scheduled to go on sale in the third quarter of this year itself but the company had to delay the launch due to the COVID-19 which has now been shifted to the last quarter of this fiscal. Tata Gravitas would be available in both 6-seater and 7-seater versions while competing against MG Hector Plus and Mahindra XUV500 in India. The SUV will borrow several elements from the Harrier.
Recently, Shailesh Chandra, President - Passenger Vehicles Business Unit (PVBU), Tata Motors told our friends at ET Auto that the company is planning to add two more new SUVs in the form of Gravitas and Hornbill to its product portfolio. Presently, the home-grown automaker has two SUVs namely Nexon and Harrier in India. With the addition of Gravitas and Hornbill, Tata Motors will have the biggest SUV portfolio in the domestic market. The Gravitas will be the brand's new flagship offering while Hornbill will be the new entry-level SUV in the company's arsenal. Being based on the Harrier, Tata Gravitas will carry an extra third row of seating with increase in length and width by 63mm and 83mm, respectively.
Tata Gravitas will get a myriad of premium features such as LED headlamps with LED DRLs, LED tail-lamp cluster, electric sunroof, 18-inch alloy wheels, and a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay & Android Auto. The cabin will be finished in a dual-tone black and beige upholstery as standard. Mechanically, Tata Gravitas will draw power from the same BS6 compliant 2.0L Kyrotech diesel engine as the Harrier. The power output and torque performance are expected to be the same at 168bhp and 350Nm while transmission duties will be taken care of by a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic unit. There is no confirmation on the introduction of an AWD (4x4) system with the SUV.
