Checkout how the sub-compact SUV segment is heated up with fierce competition going on between Tata Nexon and Mahindra XUV300.

Tata Nexon and Mahindra XUV300 are the only two vehicles to offer a diesel-automatic combination in the sub 4-meter SUV segment to the buyers in the Indian market.

Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra are two iconic home-grown automakers who have been a pioneer in this biz from the past couple of decades in the country. Both of them have given the auto aficionados a plethora of cult SUVs and as far as rivalry is concerned, it goes almost a decade back with the introduction of Safari and Scorpio from Tata and Mahindra, respectively. Since then, the companies have rolled out several new SUVs but the competition is as fierce and fresh even today. With the new crop of SUV models in the Indian market today, both the automobile giants have taken it to a whole new level altogether. Here in this piece, we will talk about the diesel AMT versions of Tata Nexon and Mahindra XUV300 as they are the only two to offer a diesel-automatic combination in the sub 4-meter SUV segment to the buyers:

Tata Nexon was introduced with a BS6 compliant diesel engine in January 2020. The same 1.5L 4-cylinder turbocharged engine was upgraded to BS6 emission levels while offered with both manual and automatic transmissions. Tata Nexon BS6 diesel AMT price starts at Rs 9.80 Lakhs while going as high as Rs 12.70 Lakhs (Both prices are Ex. Showroom, Delhi). The BS6 diesel engine develops a top power of 110bhp and peak torque of 260Nm while linked to a 6-speed automated manual transmission (AMT) unit. It returns an ARAI certified mileage of 22.40kmpl. The company has hiked the price of the automatic variants significantly by upto Rs 1 Lakh as compared to their BS4 counterparts. There are a total of seven automatic variants on offer: XMA, XZA+, XZA+ with dual tone roof, XZA+ (S), XZA+ with dual tone roof (S), XZA+ (O), and XZA+ with dual tone roof (O).

Coming to the Mahindra XUV300, the BS6 compliant diesel variants were launched in the last week of April 2020. The 1.5L 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine has been updated to BS6 emission norms while the power output and torque performance remain the same at 115bhp and 300Nm, respectively. The engine has been linked to a 6-speed AMT gearbox while the ARAI certified fuel efficiency figures are not available yet. The Mahindra XUV300 BS6 diesel AMT price began at Rs 9.99 Lakhs and go as high as Rs 12.69 Lakhs for the range-topping variant (Both the prices are Ex. Showroom, Delhi). Though, the company has kept the pricing of BS6 diesel AMT variants unchanged from the BS4 variants. There are a total of three AMT variants available for sale in the XUV300 lineup:  W6 AMT, W8 AMT and W8(O) AMT.

If we take a closer look at the aforementioned figures, it is fairly clear that Mahindra XUV300 BS6 diesel AMT is more powerful than the Tata Nexon BS6 diesel AMT. As for pricing, the Nexon starts at around Rs 19,000 cheaper than the XUV300 but the top-end variants of both the SUVs are evenly matched at Rs 12.70 Lakhs. Though, the Nexon gives a buyer many more options to choose from as compared to the XUV300.
